Understanding GPA and CGPA: Complete Guide for SRM IST Students
Written by Sai Narayana & Hariesh (B.Tech CSE, SRM IST Trichy 2021-2025) | Last updated: March 2026
Look, whether you guys are freshers just figuring out where the canteens are, or final years stressing over getting placed, you gotta understand how this GPA and CGPA stuff actually works. Me and Hariesh wrote this guide based on our own 4 years here, to help you figure out the grading system without the usual headache. Trust me bro, knowing this early saves you so much trouble during placements.
๐ What is GPA?
- See how much you scored this specific sem
- Figure out which subjects wrecked your score (looking at you, Data Structures)
- Target a better score next time so internals aren't so stressful
- Keep it high if you want any shot at scholarships
๐ What is CGPA?
- The magic number companies check before letting you sit for placements
- Super important if you are planning to go abroad for MS
- Maintaining those fee waivers across your 4 years
- You literally need a minimum CGPA just to get your degree in hand
๐ SRM IST Grading Scale
| Grade | Description | Points | Percentage |
|---|---|---|---|
| O | Outstanding | 10 | 90-100% |
| A+ | Excellent | 9 | 80-89% |
| A | Very Good | 8 | 70-79% |
| B+ | Good | 7 | 60-69% |
| B | Above Average | 6 | 55-59% |
| C | Average | 5 | 50-54% |
| P | Pass | 4 | 45-49% |
| F | Fail | 0 | Below 45% |
| Ab | Absent | 0 | - |
๐งฎ GPA Formula
๐ CGPA Formula
๐ Example: Semester GPA
Physics (5, O) = 50
English (3, A) = 24
Total = 110
GPA = 110 / 12 = 9.17
๐ GPA Requirements for Opportunities
| Opportunity | Typical CGPA |
|---|---|
| Top Tech Companies | 8.0 - 9.0+ |
| Product Companies | 7.5 - 8.5+ |
| Service Companies | 6.0 - 7.0+ |
| MS (Top US) | 8.5 - 9.5+ |
| Government Jobs | 6.0+ |
| Minimum Graduation | 5.0 |
๐ก Key Points to Remember
Bro, credits are everything. A 4 or 5-credit subject will literally make or break your sem. Back in my 3rd sem, I scored an O in a 2-credit lab exam but got a C in a 4-credit core subject, and my GPA tanked hard. Always prioritize studying for those high-credit subjects over the small ones.
Listen, even a single F grade (which means 0 points) will drag your GPA to the floor, especially if it's a heavy subject. Try your best not to get arrears. Just maintaining decent internals and writing a decent paper can save you from a backlog.
Don't panic if your first sem GPA is low. CGPA is basically your average over all sems. One bad sem won't ruin your life or your package if you bounce back and score better in the next ones. You guys have plenty of time to recover.
If you do end up with a backlog, just clear it in the next attempt. Once you pass, the new grade replaces that ugly F in your CGPA calculation. My roommate messed this up once, ignored his arrears, and had to rush in the final year. Clear them ASAP!
Depending on when you joined, you fall under different SRM regulations (like 2018 or 2021). The credit structures change, so make sure you are using the correct regulation when you calculate your GPA, otherwise your math will be completely off.
๐ฏ Tips to Improve Your GPA / CGPA
- Grind the high-credit subjects first, leave the 1-credit stuff for later
- I know making timetables is boring, but at least track your syllabus
- Previous year question papers are a literal cheat code for exams
- Actually understand what you are reading, mugging up won't help in viva
- Keep your attendance above 75% so you don't beg for internals
- Ask questions if you're lost, mostly everyone else is lost too
- Be somewhat active in class, teachers remember faces during lab exams
- Be on good terms with your faculty, it seriously helps with internal marks
- Find a friend circle that actually studies a bit before exams
- Teaching your friends the night before the exam is the best way to revise
- Share those PDF notes and important questions in the WhatsApp group
- Keep each other awake during those crazy all-nighters
- Start studying at least a week before the sem exams, not just the night before
- Last-minute cramming usually ends in confusion
- Join clubs and do fests, but don't let your grades completely drop
- Take a break, go to the canteen, and chill a bit to avoid burnout
- Check where you stand using our GPA calculators
- Aim for a realistic target like an 8.5+ so you are safe for placements
- Spot the tough subjects early (like Math or OS) and focus on them
- Change your studying style if you feel your grades are dropping
- If you get a backlog, make it your number one priority to clear it
- Do not let your arrears pile up, it becomes a nightmare in 4th year
- Figure out why you failedโwas it internals, lack of prep, or bad luck?
- Don't ego it, ask your seniors or toppers for help passing those tough papers
