What is CGPA and How is it Calculated at SRM IST?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is basically your whole academic scorecard across all the sems you've finished here at SRM IST. Unlike your sem GPA which is just a one-time thing, CGPA tracks your entire journey from first year all the way till you graduate.

At SRM IST, this number is literally your ticket to getting placed, grabbing a crazy package, or going for higher studies. It sits right there on your final degree certificate, trust me bro.

CGPA Formula Used at SRM IST

CGPA at SRM IST is calculated as a credit-weighted average of all your semester GPAs. Sounds fancy, but here's how it works:

This basically means sems with more total credits will pull your overall CGPA up or down way more. Sem 1 and 2 usually have different credit totals compared to the core sems later on, so every sem doesn't carry the exact same weight.

Worked Example

Let's look at a quick example of a CSE guy (maybe you guys?) who just finished 4 semesters:

• Higher Studies: Planning for an MS abroad? Getting an 8.5+ CGPA makes your profile look way better, especially for top US or European colleges.
• Scholarships: If you're on a scholarship or fee concession here at SRM IST, keeping a minimum CGPA is a must so the management doesn't revoke it.
• Graduation: You literally need a minimum CGPA of 5.0 and no active backlogs to actually get your degree and graduate from SRM IST.
