Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Put together by Sai Narayana & Hariesh (B.Tech CSE, SRM IST Trichy 2021-2025) | Last updated: March 2026

Welcome to the FAQ section! You guys ask a lot of questions, so I figured I'd put all the answers in one place. Hariesh and I built this based on our own chaotic four years at SRM IST Trichy, dealing with internals, lab exams, and the grading system. Trust me bro, we know the pain.

General Questions

Q1: What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?

GPA is basically your score for one single sem, while CGPA is your overall average across all the sems you've finished. My roommate messed this up once and thought his 9 GPA in 1st sem meant his CGPA was fixed forever lol.

Q2: How is GPA calculated at SRM IST?

GPA = Σ(Credit × Grade Point) / Σ(Credits). Honestly, doing this manually before every results day is super annoying, so our calculator handles this automatically for you.

Q3: What is the grading scale used at SRM IST?

SRM IST uses a 10-point scale (O=10, A+=9, A=8, B+=7, B=6, C=5, P=4, F=0). Getting an O is a total flex, but let's be real, most of us just pray we don't see an F.

Using Our Calculator

Q4: Do I need to know credit values?

Nope! We already fed all the 2021 regulation course credit info into the database. You guys don't need to hunt for your syllabus copy just to check credits.

Q5: How do I calculate CGPA?

Just pick your regulation and branch, type in your sem GPAs, and hit the Calculate CGPA button. Super simple.

Q6: My branch is not listed?

Right now we only support the SRM IST Trichy branches since that's our campus. Hit us up if you want us to add your branch!

Technical Questions

Q7: Is my data stored?

Nah man. We don't save anything on servers. All calculations happen locally right in your browser, so your backlogs stay a secret between you and your screen.

Q8: Can I use this on mobile?

Yeah of course. The website works perfectly on your phone, so you can nervously calculate your marks right outside the lab exam hall like the rest of us.

Q9: Do I need to install anything?

No app installs or anything like that required. Just open the link whenever results drop.

Academic Queries

Q10: What GPA is considered good?

Getting 8.0+ is pretty safe if you want to get placed with a decent package. 9.0+ is god level. But seriously guys, don't ignore your coding skills and projects. A 9.5 won't save you if you can't write basic code during placements.

Q11: How can I improve GPA?

Don't bunk too much, and focus hard on the 3 or 4-credit subjects. Back in my 3rd sem, I totally ignored a high-credit core paper and it tanked my GPA big time. Also, try to score well in your internals and viva, it makes the end sem way less stressful.

Q12: Minimum CGPA to graduate?

Usually you need at least a 5.0 CGPA and you gotta clear all the required credits. But aim higher if you actually want a job.

Q13: Do arrears affect GPA?

Oh yeah, big time. Getting an F grade = 0 points for that subject, which drags your sem GPA down. But once you clear those arrears, your CGPA bounces back.

Calculator Accuracy

Q14: Is this calculator accurate?

Yeah it is. We literally use the official SRM grading scales and formulas. But keep in mind it's an unofficial estimation tool built by us, so don't go fighting with the COE if there's a 0.01 difference.

Q15: Why slight differences from transcript?

Sometimes the official transcript has slight rounding differences, or maybe you took some weird elective that isn't included in our database yet.

About This Service

Q16: Is this official SRM website?

No way, the college didn't make this. It's just an independent project Hariesh and I built to help you guys out.

Q17: Is this free?

100% free. We're just students trying to make life easier for our juniors.

Q18: Who created this?

Created by me (Sai Narayana) and my buddy Hariesh! We are from the B.Tech CSE 2021-2025 batch.

Q19: How to report bugs?

Just drop an email to srmguide23@gmail.com or use the Contact page if you find something broken.

Q20: Can I contribute?

For sure! If you notice any missing electives or have ideas to make this better, just let us know. We'd love the help.
