What is CGPA and How is it Calculated at SRM IST?
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is basically your whole academic scorecard across all the sems you've finished here at SRM IST. Unlike your sem GPA which is just a one-time thing, CGPA tracks your entire journey from first year all the way till you graduate.
At SRM IST, this number is literally your ticket to getting placed, grabbing a crazy package, or going for higher studies. It sits right there on your final degree certificate, trust me bro.
CGPA Formula Used at SRM IST
CGPA at SRM IST is calculated as a credit-weighted average of all your semester GPAs. Sounds fancy, but here's how it works:
CGPA = Σ (Semester GPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Σ (Total Credits)
This basically means sems with more total credits will pull your overall CGPA up or down way more. Sem 1 and 2 usually have different credit totals compared to the core sems later on, so every sem doesn't carry the exact same weight.
Worked Example
Let's look at a quick example of a CSE guy (maybe you guys?) who just finished 4 semesters:
| Semester | GPA | Credits | GPA × Credits |
| Semester 1 | 8.5 | 20 | 170 |
| Semester 2 | 8.8 | 22 | 193.6 |
| Semester 3 | 9.0 | 24 | 216 |
| Semester 4 | 8.2 | 23 | 188.6 |
| Total | | 89 | 768.2 |
CGPA = 768.2 ÷ 89 = 8.63
Why CGPA Matters for SRM IST Students
- Campus Placements: Almost every company has a cutoff. Top tier recruiters coming for placements like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon usually want an 8.0+. Mass recruiters and service companies like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro will ask for 6.0-7.0+. My roommate messed this up once by totally ignoring his internals, don't be that guy.
- Higher Studies: Planning for an MS abroad? Getting an 8.5+ CGPA makes your profile look way better, especially for top US or European colleges. It just shows you're serious.
- Scholarships: If you're on a scholarship or fee concession here at SRM IST, keeping a minimum CGPA is a must so the management doesn't revoke it.
- Graduation: You literally need a minimum CGPA of 5.0 and no active backlogs or arrears to actually get your degree and graduate from SRM IST.

Tips to Maintain and Improve Your CGPA
- Start strong in early semesters — The first two sems are basically free marks. Score high early on so your CGPA stays super safe even when core subjects get crazy tough later.
- Clear arrears immediately — If you fail, clear that backlog fast! When you pass, the new grade replaces the big fat F in your overall CGPA calculation.
- Use this calculator to plan ahead — I used to plug in random GPAs before my lab exam and viva to see exactly how much I needed to score to save my CGPA. Try it out, it helps reduce the anxiety.
- Focus on high-credit semesters — Back in my 3rd sem, we had so many heavy 4-credit subjects. Grinding during those heavy sems boosts your CGPA big time compared to sems with lighter credits.
- Consistency matters — One bad sem won't kill your dreams of getting placed. Just focus on your internals next time around, submit those assignments, and you'll bounce back easily.
CGPA vs Percentage Conversion
Sometimes companies and placement forms will ask for your percentage instead of your CGPA. The general rule we students follow is:
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 (approximate)
For example, a CGPA of 8.5 ≈ 80.75%. Keep in mind that's just an approximate conversion though. For official placement stuff, always double-check what the SRM IST placement cell or the company HR actually wants before filling the form.
